Art work by blind artists
Ivan Ferlan

Self-taught sculptor Ivan Ferlan was born in 1924 on the Pelješac peninsula. He started making clay statuettes while he was still in elementary school. He was later tutored in carving by his father, who was a carpenter, and started making wooden sculptures. His sight began to deteriorate by the end of 1940. In his youth, as he himself had said, he became acquainted with art of all periods, which strongly affected his later calling. He dedicated the rest of his life to sculpture, leaving behind several hundred works in wood and terracotta, many of which are housed in the Tiflological Museum. He exhibited his pieces in both solo and group exhibitions throughout his life.

Displayed under glass are original sculptures: Billy Goat, Cow, Pig, Horse, and The Village Farmyard. For three of these sculptures — Billy Goat, Pig, and The Village Farmyard — replicas have been made available for tactile interaction by visitors.
