circa 1900
wood, metal
the gift of the Institute for the Blind, Radnička street, Zagreb, 1953
inv. no.: 1176
The slate consists of a wooden base with a frame into which metal plates are inserted, featuring openings for lead rectangular prisms with Arabic numerals and Latin letters. Since there is very little information about this item, it is still a subject of research. It is believed to be part of a printing device from the late 19th century, possibly used for relief printing. Devices like this were employed to print books using raised-line script. Damp paper would be pressed with embossed letters, and once dried, the raised letters would remain, allowing them to be read by touch.
This item was donated to the museum in 1953 by the Institute for the Blind in Zagreb.
