The Primer is a textbook for elementary Braille instruction, created about ten years after Bek’s first primer, in 1898. It was donated to the museum by Tomislav Karlović from Zagreb in 1982.
It is difficult to determine the exact principles Bek applied in the sequence of letter instruction in the Primer, but it is clear that he believed learning to read should begin with the introduction of meaningful syllables (ba-ba, ta-ta, etc.). He also adhered to the principle of gradual progression from simpler to more complex elements, while considering the degree of tactile simplicity. The soundness of of Bek’s principles is proven by the fact that this Primer was used at the Institute until 1941.
