The spelling book is a teaching aid used in early Braille reading instruction, created in the late 19th century. It was donated to the Typhlological Museum in 1958 by the Veljko Ramadanović Institute from Zemun, Serbia.
It was used at the Vienna Institute for the Education of Blind Children from the mid-19th century. The spelling book consists of tiles with individual Braille letters in relief, which are inserted into grooves on a board. Its purpose was to help students learn the shapes of letters. By practicing on the enlarged Braille letters, students would develop the ability to recognize and connect letters into words and eventually form simple sentences, while also improving their fine motor skills and finger dexterity.
