In early 1893, The Friend of the Blind started expanding its scope of work and promoting the interests of deaf-mute people as well. The idea of a new concept was brought to light by the commissioner for religious education, Dr. Isidor Kršnjavi. Along with the extended concept, the journal changed its name to The Friend of the Blind and the Deaf-mute. It came out once a month, and in 1896 it became the paper of the St Vid Society that supported the blind. In early 1894, the journal began to publish articles related to the education of children with mental disabilities, behavioral issues, and children with speech disorders. Due to the illness of the editor Vinko Bek, The Friend of the Blind and the Deaf-mute stopped publishing in 1898. The greatest achievement of this journal was that it was the first one to express the idea of an organized education of children with developmental difficulties.
